It has been almost a decade since Hoobastank dropped a new song, and that gap shows up everywhere on “How Do You Sleep?” which was released on 14th June 2026. The band came back swinging, choosing a sound rooted in their own beginnings rather than chasing the radio formula that made them famous.

The song leans into a heavier, punkier register than anything Hoobastank has put out since their early days, with Doug Robb’s delivery pushed almost into hardcore territory at points. That is a sharp turn from the soaring, polished rock that defined “The Reason.” For me there are close similarities to The Offspring and Sum 41 here.
Influences and History
Hoobastank actually started out as a ska punk act when they formed in Agoura Hills more than thirty years ago, long before “The Reason” turned them into a band best known for ballads. “How Do You Sleep?” pulls from that earlier identity rather than the version of the band most casual fans know. It is described as a modern return to the raw energy and driving riffs that defined their self titled debut, before the bigger, smoother hits arrived.
Production
Howard Benson produced the track, the same person behind Hoobastank’s platinum selling debut and their breakthrough album that contained “The Reason.” Benson has said he was struck by how much material the band brought him this time around, calling it a “plethora of great material,” and said he booked studio time on the spot after hearing it so the momentum would not be lost. Robb has credited Benson’s passion as a big part of what opened the door to making new music again, adding that Benson gave the band direction but also more freedom than in past sessions.
Context Around the Release
The song debuted live at Vans Warped Tour in Washington, D.C. before it was officially released, which fits the more high energy, festival ready direction the band took. Robb described releasing new music as feeling like a creative pressure valve finally opening after years away. The current lineup behind the track is Robb on vocals, Dan Estrin on guitar, Jesse Charland on bass, and Chris Hesse on drums.
Where It Sits in Their Catalog
As of release, “How Do You Sleep?” stands alone as a single, with no album announced. The band has stayed busy regardless, with upcoming festival dates and a fall tour supporting Staind’s twenty fifth anniversary run for Break the Cycle, alongside Seether and Hinder. Renewed attention to their catalog through TikTok trends and television placements has also brought a new audience to the band in the past few years, which gives this return a bigger spotlight than it might have had a decade ago.
Final Thoughts
“How Do You Sleep?” will not replace “The Reason” in anyone’s wedding playlist, and based on what the band and producer have said about it, it was never meant to. It reads as a deliberate return to a rougher, earlier version of Hoobastank, made with a producer who clearly still believes in them. For a band stepping back into the spotlight after eight years away, that is a more interesting choice than playing it safe.
