Guide
Brooklyn’s Paper Lady have built a reputation on turning emotional wreckage into something you can scream along to, and their new single proves they’re nowhere near finished mining that vein. “Cellsword” is out now, and it lands like a warning shot dressed up as a love song gone wrong.
A Title That Does the Heavy Lifting
The wordplay here isn’t just clever for the sake of it. Twisting “sellsword” into “Cellsword” reframes the mercenary as someone who trades their own freedom for the comfort of a cage they built themselves. That’s the whole song in one word, and once you clock it, every lyric after hits a little harder.
The Sound: Jagged, Dense, Unwilling to Sit Still
Vocalist Alli Raina has talked about wanting the track to feel uneasy in real time, and that tension bleeds through every bar. Guitars claw against each other rather than lock into place, the kind of dissonance that recalls Autolux at their most unsettled, while the low end keeps everything grounded even as the melody threatens to spiral. Nothing here is polished for radio comfort. It’s meant to itch.
Submission Dressed as Survival
“Cellsword” refuses easy villains. Raina isn’t pointing fingers outward, she’s dissecting the moment fear starts masquerading as peace, when giving up looks a lot like growing up if you squint hard enough. It’s an uncomfortable listen precisely because most people have lived a version of that lie at some point.
The Bigger Picture
Following last year’s Idle Fate, an album that earned real attention from Spotify’s indie tastemakers and a nod from Bandcamp, “Cellsword” signals a band digging deeper rather than repeating a formula. With a new full length due in early 2027, this single feels less like a teaser and more like a statement of intent. Paper Lady aren’t interested in comfort, theirs or anyone else’s, and that refusal is exactly what makes them worth watching.
